Marston Mat, more correctly called PSP - Pierced (or Perforated) Steel Planking, is a type of specially formed, steel plates, with the possibility of joining them, to create a hardened surface for aircraft. Used from World War II to the present day. The name was adopted from Marston, North Carolina.
The first practical use of Marston Mat took place during the Carolina Maneuvers, a series of U.S. Army exercises that took place in November 1941. A 910 m by 46 m landing area was built from this material near Camp Mackall in the Marston area of North Carolina. The installation of the landing area was completed in 11 days. The landing area was dismantled immediately after the exercise, and the storage mats were transported by rail to Langley Field, beginning their military career.
In a set of 20 identical plates.
